Graham County joined the bandwagon of “picking winners and losers” by forming its very own economic development commission. The nine-member board, with seats yet to be filled, will decide who gets six-year tax breaks and work to obtain grants for other businesses. The Carolina Journal has a whole catalog of reasons why it is does not make economic sense for government to play, as Dr. Carl Mumpower used to say, a “rigged lottery” with tax collections.
