The Christian Science Monitor ? which I take at home as a sort of ?afternoon paper? ? is running a remarkable series of articles called ?Continental Divide? that examine the polarization of the American electorate. The first piece set up the thesis, the second explored why previously Democratic Georgia has gone Republican, and the third looked at the reverse of that trend in Illinois ? the drift of a battleground state with a Republican twinge (except in Chicago, of course) towards the Democratic camp. Two additional pieces will appear soon. There are points to quibble with, but for the most part this is good, analytical journalism.
