The lineup for November’s Wake County commissioner races will make for great –and much needed — discussion of local issues, including budget priorities and the role of government. The candidates have very different views.

Last night, Republican Phil Matthews won the GOP Dist. 2 primary and, thus, the right to challenge Democratic incumbent Lindy Brown in the fall race. Look for a lot of discussion about the commission’s relationship to the school board.

In the Dist. 7 race, it’s another clear-cut choice between two gentlemen with very different views of government. Incumbent Republican Paul Coble will be challenged by Wake County Democratic Party Chairman Jack Nichols.

In Dist. 3, incumbent Republican Tony Gurley — the board chairman — faces Democrat Steve Rao.

In Dist. 1, incumbent Republican Joe Bryan is being challenged by Democrat Don Mial.

Study up. The outcome of these races will have huge consequences for the future of Wake County and the pocketbooks of every county taxpayer.
