The Greensboro Redevelopment Commission voted yesterday to sell over two acres of downtown land to a neighborhood association hoping to build a hotel with federal stimulus money.

The City Council will take up the matter at its Jan. 5 meeting. It should be interesting. I give some council members credit for at least acknowledging that this is a controversial project before pencil-whipping the application for fed funds.

By the way, Bridget Chisholm, the former Memphis-area county commissioner who’s spearheading this effort on behalf of the Ole Asheboro Neighborhood Association, spoke at the last council meeting in support of applying for fed money. She was very well-spoken and —on the face of it — made using taxpayers’ money to build a $200 per-night hotel sound so logical.
