The story doesn’t venture a guess why, but the trend is clear: lots of federal employees are retiring at levels well above the numbers predicted by federal personnel officials.

OPM received 10,183 retirement claims in March, more than double the number it expected to receive, according to new OPMdata.

The unexpected March bump follows a torrent of retirements claims in February, when OPM received about 20,000 retirement applications — nearly four times what it expected.

OPM also received 22,187 claims in January. The beginning of the year typically sees a large number of federal employees retiring.

But will they all be replaced?
