Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson likes the extra money illegal immigrants bring into his new $12 million jail.

Guilford County Sheriff BJ Barnes, looking forward to a new jail of his own, wants in on the action.

Barnes told the HPE that he’s filed an application to participate in the federal program that allows local enforcement officers to hold illegal aliens:

“The problem is, if I don’t do it, we become a haven (for criminals) if Alamance, Forsyth, Randolph and everybody else around here does it,” he said. “I’m not going to send people out just to look for (illegal immigrants). But if we do arrest someone, then I want us to have the wherewithal to handle getting the information we need and do whatever we need to do to make sure we’re a player.”

I wonder what Barnes adversary Skip Alston thinks about this.
