Give a pat on the back to the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Chamber of Commerce. The group is once again fighting the so-called “privilege” tax on businesses. The chamber effort generated an interesting comment on how the system works from Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy, who says the privilege tax is “just part of the structure of how we fund the services that our government provides.”

“We hardly ever hear from anybody that we shouldn’t provide the services that we provide.”

I’d say the mayor just issued a challenge to the 2,820 businesses who’ve paid $127,335 so far in “privilege” taxes this fiscal year.
