North Carolina recently changed the fishing license laws whereby anyone on public assistance is given a FREE fishing license waiver(FLW), the rest of us have to pay $15 annually.  This arrived earlier in the week from one of our DownEast counties.

On Monday a man was on his way to our office to obtain a FLW.  In route he started to have chest pains and went to our hospital emergency room where he was admitted to the hospital. On Tuesday he told hospital staff he had an appointment with his Medicaid worker and he needed to check himself out from the hospital temporarily to see his Medicaid worker because she needed to talk with him about his Medicaid eligibility.  The hospital agreed to let him leave temporarily to come to our office.  When he came to our office he asked to see our Medicaid Supervisor.  He told our Supervisor that he was suppose to come in about his Medicaid eligibility.  After talking with the man further, the Supervisor determined that the man had lied to the hospital about needing to see his Medicaid worker.  In fact, he checked himself out temporarily to come to the office to obtain the FLW.  We gave him one and afterwards he re-checked himself back into the hospital.  Just when you thought you had heard it all….
