My friend Greg Kaza, a former Michigan state legislator who runs a state think tank similar to JLF in Arkansas, posts these interesting data on job creation in the Southeast since 2001. Florida, Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina are among the states posting gains through January 2004. North Carolina posted the biggest loss, with Georgia surprising me with a small employment loss, too. Another interesting fact: as I eyeball the list, the states with job gains are almost all at the low end of the list on tax burdens in the region, while the states with job losses are almost all (excepting Alabama) at the high end. Must be a coincidence.
