It would seem so.
Meanwhile, Durham’s leaders fiddle faddle around in abject terror of making a politically incorrect move regarding bums and panhandlers. Oh, excuse me. Frequent Right Angles commenter “Rose Maxway” would probably want me to term them “unfortunate wonderful people currently oppressed by the capitalist system and reviled by angry conservatives who take joy in their misfortune.”
But in San Francisco, bastion of lefty liberalism taken to extremes, the population is tired of homeless people throwing up and defecating on their doorsteps. One resident interviewed by the Chronicle said, “I don’t think this is a conservative or liberal thing. This is quality of life for everyone.”
While it shouldn’t be a conservative-liberal issue, it is. Lefty liberals can’t make tough decisions without getting all weepy, a la the aforementioned Rose. In San Francisco they can’t even bring themselves to stop public sex at street fairs for fear of offending someone. So, good luck, San Franciscans, in getting any action on the homeless issue.
Meanwhile, in Durham our county commissioners and city council members twiddle their thumbs and wait for all the incumbents to get re-elected. Just like in San Francisco.
