Over the past two years, the phrase “it’s about jobs” threatened to overtake “it’s for the children” as the favorite plea from North Carolina’s powerful spend-and-tax lobby. But, the reality of grappling with a $2 billion+ budget hole has revived the “for the children” mantra and ratcheted up indignant demands from some public employees who seem to believe it is out of bounds for them to share in necessary moves to put this state back on a course to solvency and, eventually, prosperity. We’ve seen prime examples of their unbelievably inappropriate temper tantrums in Orange County and in Lee County. There was another example of demands by spend-and-taxers at the legislature recently as well. In his Daily Journal today,  John Hood updates us on yet another example of public employees who are fuming and fussing — “for the children” of course. As reasonable people know, it’s really for the public employees. Hood’s piece is a keeper.
