In general, crude oil futures prices are reliable indicators of gasoline futures prices ? but not always. A series of problems with oil refining has caused lower-than-expected supplies. Here is a graph of crude oil futures prices against gasoline futures prices; you can see the separation in recent months. Note that the crude oil price is below where it was at this point last year, while the gasoline price is higher. (Click on the graph for a larger version.)
