This could be more like it. The Greensboro City Council instructs City Manager Rashad Young “to make as many additional, nonservice cuts to the city’s budget as possible” while restoring funding for loose-leaf collection, libraries and crossing guards.

Council members “peppered” Young with their own budget-cutting suggestions. Nancy Vaughan suggested the city cut its state lobbyist, while Trudy Wade suggested eliminating the city’s MWBE program, a program that the Rhino’s John Hammer described as “that was set up for graft, corruption and kickbacks.” (On that note, remember that Guilford County Schools’ MWBE coordinator resigned under a cloud of controversy earlier this year.

The Rhino keeps expressing hope that this council, elected on a platform of fiscal conservatism, will take an active role in running city government. This is a good sign, and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
