I praised Greensboro Police Chief Ken Miller following the arrest of two suspects in the murder of a 7-year-old boy and his father. I actually met Chief Miller when he was off-duty with his two young sons. I spoke with him as a private citizen, and he listened attentively. After years of turbulence within GPD, it looked like we now had stability at the top.

Unfortunately, no matter what happened to the 30-pound package of pot supposedly to be delivered to the Rev. Nelson Johnson’s Beloved Community Center, Miller comes off looking bad. Either Miller’s bending over backwards to appease the Rev. Johnson or GPD simply dropped the ball. Honestly, I don’t think it’s so overly absurd that a homeless person would traffic drugs; but if wasn’t homeless person getting the pot delivery, and it wasn’t the Beloved Community Center, who was it then?

Suddenly we’re starting to hear more about the off-duty activities of Capt James Hinson, not to mention reading about more lawsuits in the paper, you just have to wonder exactly what’s changed under Miller.

I don’t anything about Miller’s tenure with the Charlotte police force, but they’ve got the same problems as Greensboro or any other city police department. It could be that Miller is just part of the system and anyone who thought things would really change under his leadership was naive.

But it also could be that Miller is a decent man who aspired to bring true change to Greensboro but has already been broken down by Greensboro’s progressive political machine. Funny how that happens in this town— look what happened to former Mayor Bill Knight, who was not even allowed to speak at a recent City Council meeting.
