Following a late night closed session, the Guilford County Board of Education voted to fire Northern Guilford High School head custodian Louis Lawson. The N&R reports that all the Northern parents who were at last night’s meeting to speak out against the school system’s investigation into possible recruiting violations had “left well before the Lawson vote occurred.”

Lawson is a main figure in Superintendent Mo Green’s investigation, as he is alleged to have gotten the job at Northern so his son would play ball. Lawson initially resigned along with Principal Joe Yeager and AD Derrell Force. Everybody’s keeping quiet, but somebody is going to publicly prove have that Lawson knowingly accepted the job malicious intent. It might have to happen in court.

I’ll run something up the flagpole, and let me know if I’m crazy. There has been a lot of media coverage about the opening of the new $61 million Eastern High School, which the Rhino described as “anything but spartan, being a near-clone of the $43 million Northern Guilford High School, complete with a cybercafe, a career center and energy-saving design, albeit without Northern’s “tidal living machine” to process sewage.”

Think back to when Grimsley AD Bob Sawyer, when told the N&R “your school recruits for you.” I’m sure Sawyer means the metaphysical “school,” instead of the physical building, but having a phat new facility sure can’t hurt, either. Wouldn’t every student want to attend nice schools like Northern and Eastern?

I’m certainly not suggesting GCS quit building schools, but maybe they should chill out on building palaces. It makes those in ordinary dwellings appreciate their surrounding even less.
