The Guilford County Board of Education is considering lowering the threshold for Title I schools in order to —- you guessed it —– get more federal money. Not as if the feds don’t give them wide enough latitude —– currently the feds allow schools boards to designate between 35 and 75 percent of the student body receiving free or reduced lunch to qualify for Title I funds.
School board chairman Alan Duncan has expressed skepticism over the plan, as has board member Sandra Alexander. But fellow board member Paul Daniels —- who’s been teaming well with Garth Hebert to call bs on some the adminstration’s budget moves —- sums up the situation well:
Daniels said he has reservations about the entire process. He said he believes studies have shown there is rampant fraud on free and reduced lunch applications and institutional maneuvering like this leaves a bad taste in the public’s mouth.
“When you start juggling numbers like that I think that’s what leaves people cynical about things,” he said.
As if we’re not cynical enough.
