The parents of the 16-year-old Brunswick County girl who married her 40-year-old former coach are suing Guilford County Schools:
The parents of Windy Hager, the 16-year-old who married her former South Brunswick High School coach, are suing a second school board.
On Tuesday, attorneys for Dennis and Betty Hager said they filed the lawsuit last week in Guilford County, home of the school district which once employed the coach, Brenton Wuchae. That came two weeks after the Oak Island couple sued the Brunswick County School Board on July 10.
The lawsuit accuses the Guilford County School Board of not alerting authorities upon finding out Wuchae, 40, had inappropriate relationships with female students. It gets even more specific, saying the coach was transferred from Southern Guilford High to Allen Jay Middle School “until the high school student he was having a relationship with graduated.”
Superintendent Terry Grier said he hadn’t received a copy of the lawsuit and didn’t know Wuchae has been a GCS employee until he read the story about the marriage in the Star-News. Grier, however, couldn’t help but comment on the judgment of Windy Hager’s parents:
“They signed a consent form allowing them to marry, and now they turn around and sue the schools? That ought to be interesting for them to explain,” Grier said.
The Hagers have said their daughter’s behavior got out of control when she became involved with Wuchae, and that granting her request to marry him was a way of closing the situation.
So then the situation should be closed, right? I reckon not.
