I assume columnist Susan Reinhardt is making strange assertions to rile riffraff like me into getting her more publicity. Kids in Buncombe County schools get free breakfast. If they want free lunch, they must sign up for it, and great efforts are taken to recruit kids into the Free and Reduced program. If a paying parent happens to fall on hard times, the kids can still get gummint food. Unfortunately, this food will stigmatize the child. To humiliate the kid into begging his parents to sign up for free lunches, the delinquent child is given a cold cheese sandwich in a paper bag and a carton of milk. Not only is this not as fun as pizza, the cheese is intended to evoke memories of government welfare cheese. If you think it cruel for parents to deprive their children of food, please remember that smart phones and big-screen TV’s are today’s essentials.
