George, saying a rich person should “give back” is just a nice way of saying he should redistribute his wealth. I have watched over the past 10 or 15 years as that notion has found its way into the Oprah-influenced vernacular. I cringe every time I hear it. In my view, a businessman who created a product or a service that allowed jobs to be created in his community has already “given back.” I’ll leave it for others to explain why those on the left who so vociferously urge others to “give back” actually give the least.
My favorite explanation for this phenomenon comes from a comment on a blog: “In their minds just BEING a Liberal is a charitable donation.”
