If you’ve been to the UNC Hospital facility in Chapel Hill, you know it’s a jam packed campus. That’s one of the reasons UNC wants to move some of its beds to a new facility in Hillsborough. Makes sense. But because of the state’s Certificate of Need law (CON), UNC Hospitals can’t do this without permission.

That’s right. UNC Hospitals has determined that it can better serve its customers and the community by taking this step, and yet the state must sign off before it can happen. The CON law is a classic example of regulation and intervention by government that only hurts the people the state says it wants to help. Let’s hope a speedy “yes” is coming, and that the CON law is repealed.
