…it is a big idea that will cost a ton of money. Cue Jim Hunt heading to Cabarrus County to lobby for the $168 million bond package billionaire David Murdock wants for his Global Biotech Trans Park in Kannapolis. The county comission will vote on the tax-increment financing package for the project tonight.
Like all such projects, look for glowing projections about economic development to carry the day — and taxpayer’s wallets. But were this thing a slam-dunk, Murdock wouldn’t need a public subsidy to get it off the ground. Besides, biotech research is not exactly a core function of local government.
Here’s hoping this ends well. And here’s wondering what the headlines will be in three years — and which big, costly project Jim Hunt will be hyping then.
