Private donations and volunteer time are largely what funded this small yet interesting educational project in the Orange County School system. Yes, things can be done without relying totally on public funds. Meantime, “parents demanding higher taxes,” as the News & Observer puts it, continue to gripe and get press attention with the goal of fully funding the wish lists of the school system. One can only hope that the view of Moses Carey, the chairman of the Orange County Commissioners, prevails on how to address school budgets as just one piece of the county budget puzzle:

“I would think there is a better way, but we haven’t heard it yet. … The people who show up at the public hearing don’t represent everyone in the county; they represent the school faction. … We have to represent everyone.”
