As their Democratic counterparts negotiate a deal on relieving N.C. counties of their Medicaid burden, Republicans offered their own ideas this morning.
The state would take over all Medicaid spending, while the counties would pay for the relief by giving up some local revenue sources. Republicans say the deal would require no tax increase.
- House Minority Leader Paul Stam, R-Wake, describes the plan here.
- Stam says the state can absorb rising Medicaid costs more easily than counties can.
- Stam says accountability and responsibility for the Medicaid program should reside in the same legislative body.
- Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger says the GOP plan would help counties without increasing any tax burden.
- Berger recommends that the General Assembly address the Medicaid issue outside the budget.
