The Democrats who run the General Assembly are trying to finalize their new state budget.
With the prospect of a final deal increasingly unlikely before the new budget year starts Sunday, the House and Senate are now discussing a temporary budget deal to be incorporated in a “continuing resolution.” That resolution would allow state government to continue operations while the budget debate continues.
Meanwhile, Republican House and Senate leaders are pushing their own plan. They say the budget can be finished this week with no tax increase and no extension of temporary taxes on sales and income. GOP leaders say they used numbers from the existing House and Senate plans to develop their proposal.
