The Columbus Town Council directed staff to draft a more stringent ordinance to stop peddling. Currently, peddlers must pay the town $25 for a permit. Council members were concerned that peddlers hurt local business. Unlike established businesses, peddlers don’t pay business or sales taxes, and sometimes they don’t pay property taxes, either. Fundraisers for nonprofits and vending at festivals will be exempt. One idea for discouraging un-permitted peddling was printing permits on a larger piece of paper.
