Greensboro Coliseum director Matt Brown —who will also be running the proposed downtown Tanger Center for the Performing Arts —-wants construction to begin in September ’14. But as the N&R reports a lot has to happen between now and then:

Brown said it’ll take about three months to get early designs for the building and about six months to have a clear idea of the costs, once the architects are on board. He expects there to be some push and pull between city officials and the donors over the design details.

“You can’t build a $125 million building. It has to be what you can afford, what’s realistic,” Brown said. “I don’t want to be associated with cost overruns.”

Brown wants to have all the other buildings on the North Elm Street center location demolished by the end of August, in order to have the land prepped for construction as soon as the crews are ready to start.

The Greensboro Inn is scheduled to be demolished this week because it’s vacant and won’t earn rental income for the city.

Regarding the infamous Greensboro Inn — City Manager Denise Tuner Roth’s memo states demolition bids were advertised yesterday and will be received until Dec. 3. Then the bids will be sifted through and —-I assume –approved by the City Council, which may or may not have questions about the bids and the selection process. All with a new council heading into the holidays.

Then there’s the small issue of clarifying the relationship between the city and Community Foundation, which has spearheaded the project. Mayor-elect Nancy Vaughan told the N&R “I don’t think we’re even close to a draft….Other people think we are.”

I wonder who those ‘other people are.’
