N&R lead editorial on Greensboro’s city budget…..

“Wait till next year” might work in sports, but not for long in governmental budgeting. City Manager Mitchell Johnson’s proposed $395 million 2008 city budget wisely calls for a return to “truth in labeling” by addressing pressing needs now rather than deferring the bill to next year and beyond……Johnson and his staff have presented council members with a fiscally sound budget. It’s up to them to fine-tune it.

…..while the Rhino’s John Hammer gives us some insight into the thinking of one council member:

The problem is the city staff likes things the way they are, and the majority of the City Council is comfortable with a 3-cent to 5-cent tax increase every year. Councilmember Goldie Wells said that her constituents don’t pay property taxes so she doesn’t care about the property tax rate, and it shows.
