For those not on Mayor Pat McCrory’s mailing list — it helps to either hold office or work for the city — here’s how Mayor Pat spun the anti-transit tax repeal effort, which kicked off with a presser this afternoon:

City Councilmembers:

In light of the news that the effort to repeal the sales tax funding for Transit has acquired the necessary signatures, Jennifer Roberts and I will announce the formation of a grass roots group to lead the effort to support the transit funding.

The formal news release will go out in the morning, but I wanted to share this information with you first. The announcement will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Huntersville Park and Ride lot, off Highway 21 (Directions below). The MTC Mayors are also being invited.

The Pro Transit group will be led by Councilmember Mumford. The announcement will include an initial group of six members, but clearly we want more people to join in this effort, so I look forward to working with you to generate more names to help lead this effort to maintain the Transit funding.

Please come to the announcement if you can make it.

Pat

Let’s see, the Mayor and Chair of the County Commission are announcing the formation of “grass roots group.” Is it even possible to have a top-down grass roots group? Headed by a sitting city councilman? Who is employed by a bank almost certain to heavily fund the effort? I think what Pat meant to say is that the Uptown crowd is set to roll out acres of Astroturf — “support” bought and paid for by their consultants and flunkies.

And Huntersville is an odd place to launch a pep rally for CATS. Town residents are being asked to fork over future property tax dollars in order to help CATS build the $373 million North rail line — right now, with the half-cent tax in still in place.

Funny how that fact never seems to come up with the pro-CATS crowd.

Bonus Observation: On Mumford, recall Meck Deck from April 5th: Let’s keep an eye peeled to see if Mumford becomes the public face of the anti-repeal effort.
