Tom Cushman is Deffenbaugh de Hoyos Carlson Professor in the Social Sciences at Wellesley College. He teaches courses on individualism, freedom, and social conflict and has written extensively on collective violence, freedom of expression, and dissidents in authoritarian societies. He is the Founder and first Director of The Freedom Project at Wellesley College, which fosters freedom of speech, pluralism and tolerance at the College. His forthcoming book is entitled “Why Freedom of Expression Matters,” to be published in 2020.
