There is one thing that Joe Hackney knows: the State Board of Education, the Department of Public Instruction, and the public school advocacy groups don’t have a clue about how to fix public schools. Thus, he plans to hold two public hearings to gather ideas about how to raise the graduation rate.

For a moment, forget that Hackney believes that he will discover a super-top-secret program – perhaps tucked away in some distant corner of Haywood County – that will substantially raise North Carolina’s graduation rate. It ain’t gonna happen. Instead, enjoy the moment, however brief, that the Speaker of the NC House gave up on the state’s education establishment.

Welcome to the club, Joe.
