The Randy Parton Theatre is not the only mess in Roanoke Rapids these days, according to this account of the Halifax County School District’s financial debacle.

The bottom line is that the school district overspent state and federal funds to the tune (sorry) of $840,000. The school board and central office administration appeared to have no idea that the finance officer was playing footloose and fancy free with school district finances. It goes without saying that the school system did not care much for audits.

Last year, the State Board of Education closed Imani Institute Charter Middle School for financial irregularities, including failure to conduct financial audits. Of course, Halifax County School District will not have to worry about closing because, in the minds of the State Board of Education, districts schools constitute a privileged class of public schools. In the eyes of the state education mafia, all public schools are equal, but some public schools are more equal than others.
