As noted by Rush earlier, Harold Ford, Jr. made some interesting remarks today about God and the Confederacy:

I will travel to Jackson tomorrow. One of the great stories in our
campaign is our stop at the Little Rebel Bar and Grill, a little place
with a lot of Confederate flags every which way. I’m one of their
favorites. They have my paraphernalia, campaign materials up
everywhere. We’ll go there tomorrow for lunch where we really kicked
off this campaign, energized this campaign. We’ve had a great campaign
manager, and one of the unseen campaign managers has been my Lord and
savior. I’ve got great confidence people in my district and our state
want change, and it’s all in His hands now.

It’s not hard to imagine the political firestorm that would result if a conservative Republican expressed similar sentiment. If George Allen, for example, said that his unseen campaign manager was God, he would be labelled a theocratic pig who would legalize slavery.
