Just about a month in, and Mayor Pat McCrory has already re-jiggered his campaign for governor by hiring former state GOP chairman Jack Hawke to help with his effort.

Hawke sees an electable Republican candidate in McCrory. This is true, as we’ve repeatedly said here, provided McCrory finds something attractive to say to conservative primary and general election voters. Thus far McCrory has bounced around all over the place and not exactly found a theme, conservative or otherwise.

The good news, however, for McCrory is that he and Fred Smith may have separated themselves somewhat from Bill Graham and Bob Orr, although it is extremely early to declare such things. Meanwhile, Republicans as a whole continue to inexplicably recoil from hammering at the status quo and assorted corruption in Raleigh. This is not ammo to save for the general election, as seems to be the working assumption. Honest and open government should be the foundation of their campaigns, not a one week theme.

Let’s see if Hawke makes a difference to McCrory’s campaign.
