Things got a little ugly yesterday as opponents and supporters of former sheriff Gerald Hege scuffled in the parking lot following the Davidson County Board of Elections hearing to determine whether or not Hege was eligible to run for public office. The board dismissed petitions filed by the public information group Salvation’s Way, arguing Hege’s candidacy is a moot point since he lost Tuesday’s primary, running second to incumbent David Grice.

The Lexington Dispatch reports that petitioners “indicated that Hege and his supporters planned to challenge the board’s decision and that he plans to file a petition that would allow him to put his name on the November ballot for general election,” while the Winston-Salem Journal reports Hege “has no plans now to push for a write-in vote, but he wanted some direction from the board about whether they would consider him eligible to run again.”
