Hillary’s 5K plan for newborns offers a clever bid–not only for current-generation votes from the child-bearing demographic, but across generations as well; kind of a two-fer. If this is really effective as a voting investment strategy, Democrats will get parent votes now with the 5K-per-newborn deal, and then get the 18-year-old vote later, when the child is both eligible to vote and can claim the payout on the government coupon for themselves.

I don’t think it’s mainly a question of being good or bad for parents, the economy, the budget, tax burdens on future generations, etc. All serious considerations, but tactical distractions, I believe. In sum, there is something very definitely disturbing about having the state effectively become a nursery for political constituents–of any stripe.
