Never knew Himan before this case. Had been familiar with “Mark” for a long time.
Now to the photo arrays. Says no one had been identified in the first photo array. Says “victim” said assaulters were Adam, Brett and Matt. Lineup was to include people with names like that. Only had team photos from the Duke Web site. Officers even said “they all looked alike to them.” They did the array in Mangum’s home with lots of comings and goings. Officers said she was “in a lot of physical discomfort” during the lineup.
Prior to April 4 there were two instances when Mangum was shown photographs, neither time resulting in a positive I.D. The NTO allowed them to get more recent photos of the players. No one came forward so “we were left with no suspects.” They then decided to determine if there was anyone “she could direct us to” that was at the party so we could go directly to them to get them to talk. Admits this was coercion (my word), allowing them to say we know you were there and involved so talk to us.
He told the cops he wanted her to see the photographs one at a time, not in groups of six. “If felt whatever we did in this case we would have to justify later on,” which is why they videotaped the lineup PowerPoint at the police station. Gottlieb decided to do it with PowerPoint. Also wanted to see her face and the photograph she was looking at, all at the same time, so they could see her reaction to the players’ photos. So they used a second monitor aimed at the videocamera.
