Interesting sidebar on the whole Barry Bonds record-setting home run this week. The Associated Press interviewed tax consultants who believe 21-year-old Matt Murphy who came up with No. 756 could owe the IRS around $210,000. The ball is estimated to be worth $600,000.
Murphy, if he sells the ball, planned to only keep 51 percent of the ball’s profit, giving 49 percent to a friend who came with him to the game.
If the ball sells for $600,000 the IRS would get more than Murphy, who came out with the ball after a brawl in the stands.
The IRS would receive $210,000. Matt Murphy would net $198,900. His friend would get $191,000.
What a rip off!
