The Charlotte Area Transit System has set my head to spinning again, this time with news that it plans to use the honor system to collect fares on its new South Blvd. light rail line. Ticket inspectors will do the work of making sure people get tickets, not turnstiles or fareboxes or such. (Too costly CATS says — Hmmm, more money issues.)

But some trains will not be inspected at all, if CATS keeps to the 7.5 minutes between trains rule, which I frankly doubt it can.

Makes me wonder if a “free,” wholly taxpayer-subsidized choo-choo is not the ultimate goal in light rail circles.

Update: Evidently Houston uses full-bore Metro Police to check tix and issues $75 tickets to free-loaders.
