The board of trustees for the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation voted unanimously on Wednesday to approve a new 5 percent tax on short-term car rentals in Davidson County.
According to officials, that tax is expected to generate $90,000 annually – the 10 percent match required by PART’s board of trustees to help offset the cost of implementing a regional bus transit system that will connect Davidson with other counties in the Triad.
Five people spoke at the public hearing portion of the meeting, including Thomasville Mayor Joe Bennett….who acknowledged that the existing carpool lot created in Thomasville last year sits mostly empty, said he supports the proposal and believes the transit system will benefit residents countywide.
With taxes in Davidson and Randolph counites set to go into effect Oct. 1, PART director Brent McKinney said four months has been the earliest turnaround time that PART services have begun after collecting taxes, with the longest taking six months. Isn’t that just effin’ great.
