More cable TV junk. I grow weary.

The Huntersville Herald details the latest insanity, in which the Town of Cornelius is absolutely treating town residents as bargaining chips in the deluded belief that Time Warner will pay ransom for them. And Davidson? Davidson it seems thinks it can run its own fiber-to-the-home system with money from…somewhere. Federal grants? NC Edu Lotto? What?

But some folks get it:

Long-time Cornelius resident [Larry] Sprinkle told the board that half his street (Country Club Lane) had “already switched to Direct TV, and that’s just from ya’ll considering this,” said Sprinkle.

“It will just get worse. Competition is coming. I can see no reason for the town to get into the private marketplace. Immediately reduce your tax rate to 26 cents (per $100 in valuation) and vote this down.”

[Nancy] Conrad also urged a “no” vote on Consortium participation.

She said, “I just don.t get government getting into the entertainment business, I just don’t. Give us roads, parks, police, safety — that’s what we want, not free movies.”

Time Warner officials revealed at the hearing that they are ready to match or exceed MI Connection’s proposed system upgrades. TWC Government Affairs Officer Mike Tank told the board that Time Warner had $4.2 million earmarked for immediate upgrades to its Cornelius system. He said if the town decided to hand over its subscribers to TWC the upgrades would be completed within six months.

Please. Make. It. Stop.
