Writer John Tamny has an excellent column on NRO, discussing Bill Gates’ recent pronouncement that the most important thing we can do is to reduce “inequity.” (Does Gates mean “inequality”? The two words don’t mean the same thing, even though leftists often suggest that every inequality must be due to inequity.)

In the course of his article, Tamny does good work in refuting the common notion that it was because of the Marshall Plan that the destroyed nations of Europe were able to recover after World War II. Foreign aid has never been either a necessary or a sufficient condition for economic growth.

If Bill Gates ladles money into poor African nations without there first being a change away from the socialist policies followed by most of those governments, he’ll just have squandered his money.
