Last week an N&R reader wondered why she never saw anyone on the High Point greenway. HP resident Jeff Kinard answers:

There is a reason High Point University has erected those “unfriendly” fences and that its students, as well as many city residents, do not walk along the path. Despite the claims of some reality-challenged officials, much of the area surrounding the greenway is a war zone.

I have personally witnessed and reported criminal activities such as prostitution and drug dealing along its path. Armstrong Park, where the trail begins, is itself the site of regular criminal activities, including the assault on my wife and son and the armed robbery of a couple with a stroller by two individuals with a sawed-off shotgun — all during daylight hours.

Until High Point gets its head out of the sand and cleans up the surrounding area, a walk down the greenway must be approached with due caution. Never walk it alone.
