Saw an interview with Durham Chief Resident Superior Court Judge Orlando Hudson tonight on News14 and he made clear that he doesn’t want to wait until July 13 to see Mike Nifong out of the DA’s office in Durham:

When News 14 Carolina asked Hudson if Nifong could be out of office before July 13, Hudson responded, “Could be.”

Hudson said he might have a decision on what he will do within the next couple of days.

A little later The News & Observer had a similar report, but with more specificity:

The county’s top judge plans to suspend Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong from office Tuesday and appoint a special prosecutor to push ahead with a case against Nifong, who is soon to be stripped of his license.

There has been a lot of speculation on the LieStoppers Forum about why Nifong specified July 13. A friend also wondered if the date had anything to do with a bill that has passed the NC Senate and is now in the House Pensions and Retirement Committee that would take away the pensions of any public official convicted of a felony related to their official work. Her reasoning was that perhaps there was some deal to delay passage of that bill until Nifong had left office.

But, Nifong hasn’t been convicted of a felony in relation to his work — yet. Hudson’s intention of ousting Nifong and also pushing ahead with a case against Nifong could change all that.
