This sensible comment comes from southeast Raleigh resident Beteena Person, whose children are set to be bused 15 miles from home as part of Wake County’s misguided reassignment plan — a plan most school board officials are very happy to impose and then simply cover their ears and eyes when it comes to assessing whether the policy is increasing student achievement.

I grew up poor and attended my neighborhood public school. I appreciate that Ms. Person spoke to the News & Observer and didn’t mince words in relating some common sense: just because a child comes from a poor household does not mean they must sit next to a rich child in order to learn. I am living proof of it.
