Today’s government meetings are such that anytime one hears something that makes since, they simply dismiss it as padding for the political resume of a poser who knows his proposal cannot pass. Such is the case with Polk County Commissioner Ted Owens’ request to decrease property taxes 3%. The proposal followed the commissioners’ vote to retire debt, a decision which itself met opposition. Preliminary objections to Owens’ suggestion included a need to go into debt for other things, fears the state will withhold additional funding from local governments, concern about the county’s fund balance – anything but consideration for the taxpayer. The commissioners may discuss the matter at a future meeting.
