Huh? In what is apparently a real event coming soon to the Triangle, Marry Durham, Durham residents who love their town are planning a March 19 “marriage ceremony” at which people will marry Durham. You can read News & Observer columnist Barry Saunder’s take on the event here. An excerpt:

She said people who contribute will receive a marriage certificate from Clerk of Superior Court Archie Smith. Mayor Bill Bell will give away the bride – d’oh, the city – and the Rev. Carl Kenney will officiate. Durham Bulls mascot Wool E. Bull will serve as – What else? – best bull.

No bull. Kenney, who said this is his first mass wedding, said of the unusual ceremony, “I got involved because of my love for Durham. … I love Durham because it is bigger than race or class or gender or sexual orientation.”

And, of course the event has its own website — found here. Will Chapel Hill be next?
