With rising food prices in the news, I thought I’d check out Wal-Mart to see what bargains I could find. I left with half a cart of food and clothing — much of it at lower prices than I would pay at other stores. For example, I paid $2.98 for a 6 1/2 pound can of Del Monte green beans. Yes, it’s a huge can, but I’ll happily store green beans in the fridge since I typically pay 89 to 99 cents for just 14.5 ounces. I guess I’m bucking the trend in grocery shopping. Over in the clothing area, I snagged several cotton summer blouses for just $5 and $6 each. Yes, it is possible for clothing not to break the budget.

As I went through the aisles, I saw a diverse group of shoppers who clearly understand that, despite being demonized by some, Wal-Mart’s low prices help Americans save money, leaving more cash to save or spend on other things. That’s key to a lot of families, particulary those at the lower end of the economic scale. Too bad more people don’t appreciate this economic reality.

Wal-Mart’s latest contribution comes this “Sundae,” May 18. Looks like summer has officially begun.
