The Jackson County landfill is leaking more contamination than state regulations permit. Representatives of the Asheville company that has been testing groundwater have stated the water is safe to drink. Remediation will cost at most $1 million plus recurring annual costs of $10,000 in today’s dollars. A public hearing will be held before a plan for action is selected. It is scheduled to take place at an earlier than usual meeting of the Jackson County Commissioners, 1:30 pm, February 7.
