You tell me: does the view about layoffs and furloughs held by members of the UNC Employee Forum make any sense at all? Imagine you’re Chancellor Thorp, who is charged with trying to reason with these folks. From the Daily Tar Heel (emphasis is mine):

The UNC Employee Forum unanimously agreed Monday that it is against layoffs and furloughs and decided to draft a letter to Chancellor Holden Thorp explaining its position.

The forum members, who represent more than 8,600 UNC nonfaculty employees, almost exclusively devoted the meeting to concerns over layoffs, furloughs and reduction policies that have been exacerbated by the recession.

Furloughs would require employees to take days of unpaid leave, previously suggested by the forum as a way of avoiding layoffs.

People mistakenly believe they have a “right” to a life-long job with ever increasing pay and benefits regardless of performance and economic circumstances. Then again, the way things are heading in this country, they may be on to something.
