Just yesterday The News & Observer ran a critical op-ed piece regarding the resegregation of schools. But today the same paper ran on its local front a story praising the efforts of an all-black swimming event that, by definition, excludes whites. So, which is it? Why is one segregated event or institution acceptable but another is not?
And while we’re at it, why does the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black people, the only segregated-by-rule group in the Triangle. get a pass for their racist rules? I say racist because there is no other name for it. Imagine if there were a white group of any kind that not only didn’t have any black members but wouldn’t allow them. Racist would be universally used to describe that group. Well, that’s the Durham Committee, only with the races reversed. Just ask any country club that ever had such a rule, even 30 or 40 years ago. They’re still living it down.
My suggestion to the media would be to condemn racism and segregation-by-rule wherever they find it. But that won’t happen because the only groups allowed to have rules against membership of another race are minority groups.
